Synology DS725neo+ vs DS925neo+: Who Should Buy?
What if you want the performance and expandability of Synology’s Plus Series today, but don’t necessarily want to pay for its standard factory memory configuration? That is the basic idea of the new Synology DiskStation neo+ Series.
The neo+ family, launched in August 2026, includes the DS725neo+, DS925neo+, DS1525neo+ and DS1825neo+. As opposed to building an entirely new entry-level NAS platform, Synology has instead upgraded its existing Plus Series hardware with cheaper configurations beginning with 4 GB non-ECC DDR4 memory.
This makes two comparisons particularly interesting for buyers considering the two smaller systems:
- DS725neo+ compared with DS725+
- DS925neo+ vs DS925+
The amazing thing is how little else changes.
So if you’re debating if the cheaper neo+ model will be enough, or if the regular Plus is still worth spending more on, the answer really comes down to memory, workload, reliability preferences and the actual price difference at the place you buy it.
What Is Synology neo+ Exactly?
The name implies a lower performing version of the Plus Series. That’s not really what Synology has made.
Synology describes the neo+ models as sharing the same platform with the DS Plus Series. They aim to offer a more affordable entry configuration that allows customers to expand hardware later as requirements grow.
The four models presented are:
- DS725neo+
- DS925neo+
- DS1525neo+
- DS1825neo+
All with 4 GB DDR4 non-ECC SODIMM memory.
In comparison, the standard Plus models come with ECC memory out of the box. So, don’t go thinking that the DS925neo+ has a weaker processor, or that the storage architecture has been significantly reduced just because it costs less.
What Actually Changes with the DS725neo+ vs DS725+?
The DS725neo+ and DS725+ are very similar. Both use the AMD Ryzen R1600 processor.
That processor delivers:

- 4 threads
- Base frequency 2.6 GHz
- Turbo up to 3.1 GHz
Both systems also have two internal drive bays, two M.2 NVMe slots, memory expansion and support for the DX525 expansion unit. The main difference at the factory is memory.

That’s a much closer gap than many buyers may realise.
DS925neo+ vs DS925+: Same Pattern
The four-bay models are essentially the same approach. Both the DS925neo+ and DS925+ are powered by a AMD Ryzen V1500B, giving:
- 4-core
- 8 threads.
- Clock Speed 2.2 GHz
Both have:
- 4 x SATA drive bays
- 2 x M.2 NVMe slots
- Dual 2.5GbE network ports
- 2 slots memory
- Up to 32GB memory
- Support for DX525 expansion
- Expansion to a total of nine drive bays
Again, the important distinction is factory RAM.

So buying a DS925neo+ instead of a DS925+ does not mean you are dropping down from a quad-core CPU to a dual-core CPU, or losing the second 2.5GbE port. What you are mostly doing is picking a different initial memory configuration.
Why ECC Memory is Important
ECC = Error-Correcting Code memory.
It is intended to catch and repair some memory errors before they cause bigger problems. ECC might not be something you prioritise when buying a typical desktop PC.
But the conversation gets more serious when talk turns to storage infrastructure. A NAS can be up and running 24/7 and can support backups, databases, virtual machines, business files and other valuable info. ECC adds another level of protection against memory errors.
That does not mean that the neo+ systems are unreliable because of the use of non-ECC RAM. Synology has chosen 4 GB non-ECC memory as the standard configuration for the new product line. But it does mean buyers need to think about how important the NAS is. Critical operational data in a business NAS and a home file server are not necessarily of the same priority for purchase.
Can the neo+ models be upgraded to ECC later?
That’s where the neo+ concept gets more interesting.
Synology’s compatibility information for the DS725neo+ and DS925neo+ mentions the factory 4 GB non-ECC module and compatible Synology ECC memory modules. Both systems have two memory slots and will support up to 32 GB with two 16 GB modules.
Buying neo+ doesn’t mean you are stuck with 4GB non-ECC memory for the life of the NAS. You can start with the lower entry price and upgrade the memory configuration as your needs grow.
But there is an important detail.
Synology says if you install multiple memory modules they need to be identical and have the same model number. Therefore, it is important to plan the memory expansion, rather than assume any random combination of modules would suffice.
Does neo+ Compromise Storage Expansion?
The DS725neo+ and DS925neo+ are not a major sacrifice in terms of expansion compared to their respective Plus platforms.
The DS725neo+ starts with two bays and scales up to seven drives with one DX525. The DS925neo+ starts with four bays, but can expand to nine drives with a DX525.n This means the neo+ systems are very different from buying a basic NAS that doesn’t have an expansion path. You can start with a few drives and then add more. That can make the DS725neo+ particularly attractive to a small company that needs just two drives today but can see storage needs expanding. The DS925neo+ also starts you off with the more comfortable four bays, while still allowing you to expand to nine drives.

The more critical decision may not be neo+ vs. Plus, but two bays vs. four bays.

- Workloads for backups

- Small-office or advanced home NAS
The DS925neo+ makes sense if you need:
- Four internal drive bays right away
- More RAID flexibility
- Higher initial storage capacity
- Increased concurrent workloads
- A 4-core/8-thread processor
- 2 built-in 2.5GbE interfaces
- 9 drive expansion
If you already have big storage needs then buying the four bay system might make more sense than buying two bays and immediately thinking about an expansion chassis.
Who is the neo+ version for?
The strongest neo+ buyer is someone who wants the Plus hardware platform, but values initial purchase cost over factory ECC memory.
This may include:
- Home labs
- Power users
- Small Office
- Secondary NAS deployments
- Backup Repo’s
- Development environments
- Systems for branches
- Synology deployments for the budget minded
The neo+ approach is particularly attractive if the price difference is large.
You’ll get essentially the same CPU, drive architecture, networking, expansion capability and maximum memory ceiling for less money up front.
Who Should Still Buy The Regular Plus Version?
The standard Plus version remains the easier choice for most business deployments.
If you are going to make the NAS critical production infrastructure from day 1, it can be reasonable to pay for ECC memory from day 1.
This is especially relevant for systems that deal with:
- Major business data bases
- Virtualising workloads
- Critical backup storages
- Company data that is accessed frequently
- Several business services running simultaneously
- Workloads where the initial price doesn’t matter as much as uptime and data integrity
Also there is little reason to pick neo+ if the price difference is small.
In your market, the DS925+ is only a little bit more expensive than the DS925neo+, so the factory ECC configuration can be worth the extra cost.
Cheaper does not necessarily mean better value.

What if you buy the cheaper neo+ but then you are replacing the memory right away because you wanted ECC anyway. A portion of the original savings is lost.

What’s most interesting about Synology’s neo+ Series is that it doesn’t do much to redefine what these DiskStations can do. Instead, it moves where you enter the product line.
The DS725neo+ and DS925neo+ are based on the same basic platforms as their Plus siblings but with a lower price on the factory memory setup. That gives the buyer an option. If you want factory ECC memory, and the NAS is going to be running critical business workloads, the regular DS725+ or DS925+ is the easy choice.
If a lower initial budget is a bigger priority, and 4 GB non-ECC memory is sufficient for your needs today, the DS725neo+ and DS925neo+ offer a potentially attractive path into the same expandable Synology platform.
