Is Synology ChatPlus & Meet Worth Enabling in 2026?

Teams that want to keep conversations, meeting recordings, transcripts, and shared files under their own control have traditionally faced a compromise. Cloud collaboration platforms are convenient, but much of the organization’s communication data resides outside its own infrastructure. Introduced as open betas in 2026, the two applications bring messaging, video meetings, webinars, AI-assisted translation, meeting summaries, bots, webhooks, and centralized administration to supported Synology NAS environments. Synology positions them as on-premises collaboration tools that give organizations greater control over communication data.

That sounds appealing for privacy-conscious businesses and advanced home users. But these are new beta applications, and installing them deserves more consideration than simply clicking Install in Package Center. So, are ChatPlus and Meet worth enabling?

What Is Synology ChatPlus?

ChatPlus is much more ambitious than a basic update to the existing Synology Chat application.

It provides a structured collaboration environment built around teams, channels, individual conversations, and group chats. Organizations can create separate teams for departments or projects and then create channels within those teams. Administrators receive granular controls over actions such as adding members, creating or archiving channels, sending messages, and using mentions.

The messaging system includes practical collaboration features such as:

Synology Meet Adds On-Premises Video Meetings

Synology Meet handles the video side of the platform.

Meet is designed to keep video conferences and webinars within the organization’s Synology environment rather than making a third-party cloud conferencing provider the primary home for meeting data. Synology describes the beta as an on-premises meeting solution, and Meet integrates directly with ChatPlus. A user can therefore move from a ChatPlus conversation into a meeting without treating messaging and conferencing as completely unrelated services.

Meet also supports recordings and transcripts, giving organizations a central place to retain material generated during important discussions. For businesses concerned about where internal communications are stored, this is one of the most compelling reasons to evaluate the platform.

AI Translation Could Be Valuable for Multilingual Teams

One of the headline Meet features is real-time AI transcript translation. Consider a meeting involving employees or partners who prefer different languages. Rather than requiring a separate translation service or waiting for someone to translate meeting notes afterward, AI-assisted translation can provide translated transcript content during the meeting. For multinational organizations, this could make meetings easier to follow without forcing every participant to communicate in the same primary language. Synology also combines translation with AI-assisted meeting summaries. Instead of manually producing notes after every discussion, AI can generate meeting minutes containing important points and action items.

An organization interested in ChatPlus specifically because of privacy requirements should review its chosen AI provider, API configuration, data-handling policies, and Synology AI Console settings before enabling translation or summarization.

“On-premises collaboration” should not automatically be interpreted as “every AI operation occurs locally.”

Granular Permissions Are Important for Business Use

Hosting collaboration software internally does not automatically make it secure.

Permissions still matter. ChatPlus provides detailed administrative controls for teams and channels, allowing organizations to determine who can perform specific actions. This is particularly useful when a single Synology environment serves multiple departments.

For example, an administrator may want a general company channel where most employees can participate while restricting sensitive project channels to specific teams.

However, consolidation only provides value when the resulting platform meets the organization’s reliability, performance, mobile-access, and integration requirements.

Home Users Could Use It, but Businesses Are the Stronger Fit

Technically inclined home users may find ChatPlus and Meet interesting. A family running a capable Synology NAS could potentially use private messaging and meetings without depending as heavily on conventional cloud communication services.

But the feature set clearly leans toward organizational collaboration. Teams, channels, webinars, meeting transcripts, granular permissions, AI summaries, bots, and webhooks provide considerably more value in a business, nonprofit, community organization, or project-team environment. For most households, existing messaging and video applications will remain easier. Privacy-focused enthusiasts and homelab users, however, may enjoy experimenting with a communication platform hosted on infrastructure they control.

Check Your NAS Before Installing ChatPlus and Meet

ChatPlus and Meet are not universal packages for every Synology system.

The current beta requires DSM 7.3 or later and an x86_64-based compatible NAS. Synology also lists supporting package requirements including Synology Application Service, Node.js v22, and Universal Viewer. Meet cannot currently be installed on virtual machines. Administrators should verify the compatibility list for their exact NAS model before planning deployment.

Hardware sizing matters as well. Hosting occasional internal chats is very different from supporting simultaneous video conferences, recordings, transcripts, AI features, file sharing, and other NAS workloads. Businesses should evaluate CPU, memory, network capacity, storage performance, and internet bandwidth according to expected usage. Existing Synology Chat Users Need to Be Careful

There is another particularly important consideration for organizations already using Synology Chat.

Synology Chat and ChatPlus cannot operate simultaneously.

Synology states that installing ChatPlus stops the existing Synology Chat package. ChatPlus does provide a migration process for existing Chat data, but Synology specifically recommends backing up Synology Chat package data before migration. This is not an upgrade to casually test on a production collaboration server during working hours. Organizations already relying on Synology Chat should plan the transition, back up existing information, and schedule the installation appropriately.

Remember: This Is Still Beta Software

This may be the biggest reason not to enable ChatPlus and Meet everywhere yet.

As of September 2026, ChatPlus Server 1.0.0 and Meet Server 1.0.0 remain beta releases. Synology explicitly states that beta software is for evaluation and should not be installed on critical equipment or production environments.

There is another important limitation: after installing the ChatPlus beta, Synology states that the application cannot be downgraded to its previous official version. For a business that depends on messaging throughout every working day, those warnings matter. The sensible approach is to test the platform on appropriate non-critical infrastructure with a limited group before considering broader deployment.

So, Is Synology ChatPlus & Meet Worth Enabling?

For testing and evaluation, yes especially for organizations interested in private collaboration.

That makes 2026 a good time to evaluate them, but not necessarily a good time to move every mission-critical company conversation onto them.

For privacy-conscious organizations, there is also one final distinction worth remembering: self-hosting the collaboration platform provides much greater control over communications and meeting data, but optional AI translation and summarization introduce separate AI-provider considerations that should be evaluated before deployment.
