The answer is more nuanced than it was in early 2025.
What Happened With Synology’s 2025 Drive Policy?
In April 2025, Synology announced that upcoming Plus-series models would increasingly rely on its integrated drive ecosystem.
Synology argued that validated drives could provide better reliability, performance, firmware integration, and technical support. For buyers, however, the announcement raised a more practical concern: storage choice.
Many NAS users already had preferred Seagate, Western Digital, or enterprise drives. Others wanted to shop according to capacity and price rather than a relatively limited Hardware Compatibility List (HCL).
