How to Safely Update Xpenology DSM Without Breaking It
Updating DSM on an official Synology NAS is normally straightforward. Updating an Xpenology system requires considerably more caution.
Xpenology runs Synology DSM on non-Synology hardware through a community-developed loader. That additional layer means a DSM update can introduce incompatibilities involving the loader, kernel, drivers, network interfaces, storage controllers, or the Synology platform being emulated. The safest approach is therefore not to click Update Now as soon as a new DSM release appears. Why Xpenology Updates Are Different
On genuine Synology hardware, Synology validates DSM against the specific hardware platform.
With Xpenology, the relationship is different:
PC/server hardware → Xpenology loader → DSM
The loader helps DSM operate on hardware it was never officially designed to support. An update can therefore affect several compatibility layers simultaneously.

If your Xpenology installation boots from USB, having a second compatible USB device containing a known-working loader configuration can be extremely useful.

The idea is not to create an unsupported DSM downgrade mechanism.
It is to preserve your loader environment so you are not trying to reconstruct every setting after the NAS suddenly stops booting.

For a DIY Xpenology environment, automatic major DSM upgrades are generally a poor maintenance strategy.

Security updates still matter, but compatibility should be confirmed before deployment.
A reasonable approach is:
Release → compatibility research → backup → loader preparation → DSM update
rather than:
Release → automatic installation → troubleshooting
Step 8: Perform the DSM Update Carefully
Once compatibility has been confirmed and backups are complete, apply the update.
Synology supports manual DSM updates using the appropriate .pat file through Control Panel > Update & Restore. The system then reboots automatically after installation.
During the update:
- Do not interrupt power.
- Do not reboot manually.
- Do not remove drives.
- Do not modify the boot device.
- Allow additional time for the first restart.

NAS Disappears From the Network
A DSM/kernel change may expose NIC-driver incompatibility. The server might actually be running but without a functional network interface.
Drives Are Missing
Storage-controller or port-mapping changes can prevent DSM from detecting disks correctly. Do not initialize or recreate storage pools simply because disks unexpectedly disappear after an update. Investigate controller and loader configuration first.
