How to Run Containers on Synology NAS Effectively
Containers are now a common way to quickly and reliably deploy apps. Synology NAS platforms make this possible even for small teams by putting storage, networking, and application hosting all in one device. Developers and power users often use Docker on Synology to run lightweight services, dashboards, automation scripts, and internal tools without having to keep separate servers.
But workloads that are in containers act differently than just storing files. If you don’t plan ahead, problems with performance, permissions, and services that aren’t stable will come up quickly. A structured deployment method makes sure the environment stays safe and reliable.
Pick the Right Layout for Your Storage
The most common mistake is to run containers directly from the default volume without planning how to separate the data. Containers are only meant to be used for a short time, but application data is not.

Using separate shared folders for each container keeps upgrades from deleting data. Instead of root paths, bind mounts should always point to structured directories. This makes it much easier to move and restore things later.

Network Isolation Makes Things More Stable
Most deployments put all of their containers on the default bridge network. Even though it’s easy, it can cause problems when services use the same ports or need security boundaries.
This is where custom Docker networks come in. Put databases, monitoring tools, and front-end apps into separate groups so that they don’t interact with each other. Only open the ports that are needed to the outside world. Reverse proxies like Nginx Proxy Manager help direct traffic while keeping containers private.

Get Permissions Right

Planning Resources and Performance

Set limits on resources for heavy containers and keep an eye on how they are used. Databases, indexing engines, and analytics tools should have memory set aside for them. To keep storage from getting full, logging should go to rotating files.

Backup Containers Work Like Real Servers
Just because containers are easy to make again doesn’t mean they are safe. Like any other production system, persistent data needs to be backed up.
Use snapshot schedules to quickly recover from problems and external backups to protect against disasters. Export container compose files so that environments can be set up again quickly. Regularly test restoration to make sure that databases and settings really do recover.
A container platform that hasn’t been tested for recovery is just a temporary lab, not a service that works.
